“You can be anything you want to be, if only you believe with sufficient conviction and act in accordance with your faith; for whatever the mind can conceive and believe, the mind can achieve.” – Napoleon Hill
Napoleon Hill is well known for his bestselling book “Think and Grow Rich.” In this book he interviewed hundreds of successful men and women. He found that they shared a common theme in their success: the power of personal beliefs, and the role they play in personal success.
Creating success in any aspect of your life can be as simple as forming a new set of habits. Your circumstances, relationships, health…everything in the physical world around you…is a reflection of what is going on inside your mind. Most of your daily thoughts are contained here. You could think of it as a file server for a super computer, because in essence that’s what your brain is. Somewhere in that file server is a folder with the automated blueprints of every aspect of your life…every habit you follow. What you have come to accept in your life is a result of what is going on inside your mind, because your thoughts and your circumstances in your life are inseparably connected.
Now you might say to yourself, “Wait a minute! There is some pretty crummy stuff in my life right now. How can you say that’s acceptable to me?”
The thoughts that you have force your body to take physical action. That action has defined a whole series of circumstances in your life. On some level your mind has accepted those circumstances, turned them into blueprints and filed them away in your subconscious mind. But the wonderful thing is, if you created the circumstance of the problem, then you can also create the solution. You can create a new blueprint. We are creatures of creation. How cool is that?
Take a moment to let that sink in: “If I created it, I can change it. That makes me a creature of power with unlimited potential and possibility!”
Your day-to-day thoughts turn into the material reality of your day-to-day life. So if you don’t like the material reality of your day-to-day life, change your thoughts!
That’s the job of your conscious mind, to change the thoughts, or blueprints, that will change your material reality. The best way to do that is with what Joshua Boswell calls Emotional Repetition. You need to have an emotional connection with the new habit you are forming. If your emotional connection related to that habit is high—you enjoy what you’re doing—then less repetition is needed to make the habit stick. If your emotional connection is low, the amount of repetition needed will be higher.
But how do you do that in relation to your new copywriting business?
With five simple steps.
Step One – Money
Establish an exact dollar amount you want to make. You can start with a yearly goal but then break it down to a monthly income. We talk about the writer’s life being that six-figure income, so let’s start there. Say you want to make $100,000 a year. If you break that down by month, that would come to a little over $8,300.
Step Two – Date
Set an exact date of when you want to achieve this goal. If you are just starting out it may take 18 to 24 months for this income to become automated. So think of an exact date when your monthly income becomes that $8,300 consistently.
Step Three – Plan
You know how much money you want and you know when you want it. Now you need to write down your plan to achieve it. You want your plan to be specific, but also keep it simple. Your plan could be: “I want to write copy for clients in the health industry. I’m going to offer the types of copy that health industry clients use most. I’m going to make 20 phone calls each day to potential clients over the next 18 months and offer them my core copywriting services.” A simple, specific plan. Be sure to write it down.
Step Four – Visualize
Three to five times each day take a moment to visualize your plan. Why three to five times a day? This is the Emotional Repetition that will write the blueprints of your new lifestyle into your subconscious mind.
Find your emotional connection with the lifestyle you want to live. What does having this income look like? Imagine yourself in possession of the money. Visualize the emotion that comes with having a six-figure income. Think about the kind of house you have, car you drive, vacations you take each year. Really live that lifestyle in your imaginings.
Put your plan on a 3 x 5 card you can pull out and read at any time. Or you can add it to a daily reminder on your smartphone or Google calendar and have it pop up at different times during the day. Just make sure you stop for a minute or two and do your visualization.
Step Five – Action
As important as visualization and emotional repetition are, you still need to take action to make this a reality. You have a plan from step three; now you need to execute it. Take that plan and break it down into six action items you can do every day. Each item should take 30 minutes or less but should be important in moving your business toward your monetary goal. Be sure to put these items on your calendar so you make time to actually do them.
Action items could include:
- Researching potential clients in your niche.
- Developing an information packet that will showcase your writing.
- Making 10-20 phone calls to potential clients and offering to send them your information packet.
- Making follow up phone calls.
- Writing copy for your website.
Anything that will benefit your copywriting business and get you closer to your goal.
As you consistently work through these five steps you will start to see progress. It may be slow at first, but soon it will become automated and you will have that success you’ve been visualizing—success that you can continue to build on as you define new goals.
